Family Visa (Family immigration)

A foreign citizen who wants to live permanently in the US may receive a green card if he, she or they have a certain family relationship with a US citizen or lawful permanent resident (a green-card holder).

In other words, a US citizen or lawful permanent resident may sponsor certain family members to receive a green card.

In particular, US citizens can file an immigrant visa petition for their:

• Spouse
• Son or daughter
• Parent
• Brother or sister

U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents can file an immigrant visa petition for their:

• Spouse
• Unmarried son or daughter
